Augustinian Academy, Staten Island
November 22, 2001

Abandoned school at dusk.NYC has layers and layers of history, and after dinner Thursday we stumbled across one.

Peeking through the woods around Wagner College you can catch sight of an old bell tower.

Ever curious, we followed a small road through the trees and found an incredible building - at least three or four stories - covered in graffiti. It appears to have been abandoned for many years.

After some internet sleuthing I find that this building was the Augustinian Academy - a prestigious boys school and residence for postulants. It opened in 1899 (but moved to this location in Grymes Hill in 1923).

It closed for good in 1969.

I will be back to take more photos before the building crumbles entirely.

Please visit again.
